Jaime G. Garza
Co-Founder & Managing Partner

Prior to founding Hawks Point in 2020, and its predecessor ACM in 2016, Jaime was ICE Canyon’s (AUM US$2.7+ billion) NY-based portfolio manager responsible for all LatAm-related investments across all funds focusing on HY, corporate loans, and credit-related special situations.  Prior to ICE, Jaime spent 9+ years as a PM at Black River Asset Mgmt (peak AUM US$12.5+ billion) responsible for structured credit, distressed debt, and HY in LatAm and EMEA regions.  Before joining Black River, Jaime spent ~two years as a senior analyst on Citigroup’s LatAm proprietary special situations team.  He started his career in NY at JPMorgan Chase where he spent 6+ years as an investment banker focused on Latin America.  Jaime received an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management and graduated as an industrial engineer from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM).

John M. Hartzell
Co-Founder & Managing Partner

Prior to founding Hawks Point in 2020, and its predecessor ACM in 2016, John was the Managing Partner of Milton Point Capital, an international corporate finance advisory firm. From 2011-2015, he was a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager in UBS’s Special Situations group in NY, managing US$750+mm of proprietary portfolios of public and private debt investments. He previously spent 14+ years at Citigroup/Salomon Brothers as a Managing Director and Head of Citi’s Latin Bi-Lateral Proprietary Debt Trading, Co-Head of Citi’s Latin Debt Markets team, and a member of Citi’s Corporate Investment Bank Latin American Management Committee. He also was awarded Institutional Investor’s All-Star Emerging Markets Corporate Debt Research Team in 1995 and 1996 and was the architect of adapting the Altman Z-Score model to Emerging Market corporate debt. John began his career at Drexel Burnham and John Hancock trading High Yield & EM debt investments. John received an MBA from Northeastern University and a BA from Franklin & Marshall College.

Luis Mendez,
Origination & Structuring

Prior to joining Hawks Point in 2021, Luis was Senior Vice President of Infrastructure Solutions for Quanta Services, heading Latin America operations and infrastructure investment efforts. Luis is also a Managing Partner at Gonzaga Investments & Advisory and provides advisory services to strategic and financial investors in infrastructure. Luis has over 20 years of experience, including managing P&L and having served as a Director on nine company boards. He has led the origination, structuring, due diligence, negotiation, and execution of successful M&A cross-border infrastructure transactions with an equity value in excess of US$6.5 billion. Prior to Quanta, Luis was the Executive Vice President of Corporate Development and Head of Special Projects at Ashmore Energy International where he led strategic initiatives in emerging markets. Luis managed complex M&A transactions with value in excess of US$6.1 billion, including divesting legacy companies of Enron, driving outstanding financial outcomes. From 2007 to 2009, Luis was CEO of Gazel Mexico, the largest compressed natural gas fueling station business in Mexico, and from 2005 to 2007, Luis was COO of VENGAS, the largest gas distributor in Venezuela.  Luis joined Enron’s Associate program in 1998 focusing on M&A and structured finance. From 1994 to 1996, Luis worked in corporate banking for Banco Nacional de México.  Luis received an MBA from the University of Michigan Business School, and a BSc. in Civil Engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Alberto Rios,
Houston – Advisor / Origination

Prior to joining Hawks Point in 2021, Alberto was the Corporate PPA Origination VP for Latin America at Macquarie Group, responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of commercial strategies and market intelligence initiatives that lead to revenue optimization, negotiation and execution of Power Purchase Agreements for uncontracted projects. Alberto has 21 years of commercial experience in power and natural gas wholesale and retail markets, positively impacting profitability by tailoring energy commodity structured products, negotiating complex contracts, and developing advanced risk management strategies. He was also the VP and Chief Commercial Officer for Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean at the AES Corporation where he successfully led a team of 38 individuals across multiple functional areas, exceeding budgeted variable margin, contributed in strategy planning, managed commodity risk, reduced portfolio volatility, and optimized fuel logistics. Prior to AES he held a number of senior positions at energy consulting firms, Sempra Energy and Williams Energy, and Marketing and Trading. Alberto holds a BSc. in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business.

Juan Jose Hicks
Mexico – Advisor / Origination 

Juan Jose has worked for over 27 years for renowned global financial institutions holding Executive Director positions at Citi, HSBC and Scotiabank, overseeing sales & trading. Expertise in foreign exchange and derivatives, leading and developing top-ranked desks. Juan Jose has a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (graduated with Honors) from Universidad Iberoamericana, a Postgraduate Executive Diploma on Financial Derivatives from ITAM, and a Postgraduate Executive Diploma on Private Equity and Venture Capital from Università Bocconi. He is currently enrolled in ESG certification program from Wharton. Juan Jose is also a Member of the Mexican Exchange Market Committee sponsored by Banco de México, and is an external counselor for the Faculty of Finance´s Board at Universidad Iberoamericana.

Mario Braz, CFA
Brazil – Advisor / Origination

Mario is currently responsible for LATAM Treasury Finance at Stripe, a global internet payments infrastructure company. Mario has 16-year career in capital raising, capital structure advisory, debt capital markets, acquisition & leveraged finance, securitizations and treasury, having worked in teams covering various Emerging Markets regions and with a $150bn+ origination and execution debt financing track record. Prior to joining Hawks Point in 2022, Mario was a Director in Citi’s Capital Markets Origination division responsible for the coverage of Cross-Border, Local DCM, Syndicated & Leverage Finance for Brazilian corporate, FI & public-sector clients as well as leading Citi’s Sustainable DCM franchise in the country. Previously Mario held roles in Citi’s CEEMEA Team in London. Mario started his career in Citi’s Latin America DCM team in New York, where he worked with John Hartzell. Mario holds a BA in Economics from the University of Notre Dame and is a CFA charterholder.

Carlos A. Corona
Head of Origination

Prior to joining Hawks Point in 2020, Carlos led the global finance efforts in Latin America for Barclays Investment Bank. Carlos has 20+ years experience in Wall Street, focusing on originating, structuring and distributing debt and capital market transactions from Latin America. The majority of Carlos’ experience has been in originating, structuring and syndicating debt products in Mexico. Prior to Barclays Carlos worked at UBS and Citi, where he worked together with J. Hartzell on transactions from Mexico and the Latin America region. Throughout his career he has received various awards for Loan of the Year in Latin America by IFR and Latin Finance. Carlos has an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleu, France and  BS in Industrial Engineering from Universidad  Panamericana in Mexico City, Mexico. 

Jose Torrecilla
Washington DC – Origination & Structuring

Prior to joining Hawks Point in 2022, Jose founded Samcar Global Capital in 2015, a global corporate finance advisory firm. Jose is an investment professional with more than 25 years’ experience in acquiring consumer finance assets, private equity investments, project finance and M&A transactions. As a senior executive in large and mid-size corporations Jose participated in numerous successful transactions closing investing in diverse array of sectors and industries in the US, Latin America, and other jurisdictions (Europe and Asia). Jose was a Director of Business Development for Credigy where he closed several consumer finance transactions in Latin America and Europe. Before his tenure at Credigy he held a senior position at Citigroup focusing on distressed asset acquisition in Latin America. Jose received an M.B.A from Pace University.

Renewable Energy

  • Company – developer and owner/operator of green energy projects (wind, biomass, renewable natural gas, biodiesel). Acquisition target focused on renewable energy credits and power purchasing agreements.
  • Transaction – US$20 million acquisition financing bridge loan; 2yrs. with bullet amortization.
  • Deal Structure – Sr. Secured facility collateralized by all shares, assets, and accounts of target company, and guaranteed by sponsor/new parent. Covenant package mandating certain performance metrics, minimum cash-flow generation, equity contributions, and limiting any additional indebtedness.
  • Rationale – stable cash-flow generation from target company via long term contractual client relationships. Strong sponsor / new parent with highly complementary business model to deliver important operating synergies. New parent in process of raising fresh equity round and new credit lines to support ongoing growth opportunities.
  • Performance – facility’s cash coupon and repayment premium to deliver ~16-18% all-in IRR.

Fintech / Consumer Lending

  • Company – fintech company focused on origination and management of payroll-deduction loan portfolios to pensioner and government-employee community. Certified “B” Corp and ISO 9001 / 27001; Fitch rated.
  • Transaction – US$125 million loan to support portfolio growth; 5yrs. / 1yr grace with equal amortizations for a 3yr. avg. life
  • Deal Structure – Sr. Secured facility collateralized by loan portfolios in new bankruptcy-remote trust vehicle plus debt-service reserve account. Credit enhancements via parent guarantee and performance bond issued by top insurance company. Deal covenants limit NPLs and mandate high capitalization ratios and tangible net worth at Company level.
  • Rationale – excellent management team with strong track-record backed by international private equity players and multinational agencies. Well diversified consumer-loan collateral package with stable NPL history. Compelling risk/return against prevailing public debt comps.
  • Performance – facility prepaid ahead of final maturity on the back of company acquisition by global private equity firm. Facility’s final IRR ~13%+

Technology Services

  • Company – technology and communications company focused on enterprise software and digital transformation services. 3,000+ technologists with expertise in software engineering, artificial intelligence, and design.
  • Transaction – US$65 million acquisition financing loan; 5yrs. with amortizations for a 2.2yr. avg. life
  • Deal Structure – Sr. Secured facility collateralized by customer contractual receivables and company shares. Covenant package includes high debt service coverage ratios, interest coverage, and limits overall total debt on balance sheet. Additional return enhancer via performance-linked kicker to deliver up to 18% IRR.
  • Rationale – experienced management team in high-growth industry acquiring complementary tech company to deliver business diversification, growth, and operating synergies. Overcollateralized structure with receivables from diversified set of large blue-chip companies under medium-term contracts.
  • Performance – Estimated all-in IRR at exit in the 15-18% range.

Barry S. Ipp
Advisor 

Barry is a Director at Experienced Advisory Consultants (EAC) and currently working with Hawks Point in the areas of back office, operations, and compliance. Prior to joining EAC in 2022, Barry founded Carson Advisory, an investment operations and operational due diligence (ODD) risk consulting services firm that was acquired by EAC. Barry served as outsourced Chief Operating Officer of Hawks Point while at Carson Advisory from 2019 to 2022. Prior to forming Carson, Barry was Director of ODD and ESG Diligence at Fiera Capital Inc. from 2016 to 2019 where he was solely responsible for performing ODD on asset management firms and was a voting member of multiple investment committees including private credit and hedge funds. Barry was also Chairman of Fiera Capital’s Proxy Voting Committee and oversaw Fiera’s ESG efforts across all asset classes. Prior to Fiera, Barry was Partner, Head of ODD, and Chief Compliance Officer at Larch Lane Advisors from 2007 until its acquisition by Fiera in 2016. Barry was previously the Manager of the Fraud Risk and Controls Group at PwC assessing fraud risk for institutional and retail funds, domestic and offshore hedge funds, private equity, and alternative funds. Barry has held similar roles at Deloitte and Touche, Arthur Andersen and KPMG. Barry began his career at Leslie Sufrin & Co, a public accounting firm. Barry holds BA in both Finance and Accounting from the University of Rhode Island and is a Registered Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner.
